The Judgment (卦辞)
Keeping his back still, he no longer feels his body. He walks in his courtyard and does not see the people. No blame.
ExplainedThe heart is restless because the yin mountain of the body is full of desire. Keep the back turned, do not climb outward after things, as Bodhidharma faced the wall: draw back the light of eye and ear to the seat of the spirit. Then one no longer feels the body - self forgotten, wealth, beauty, fame, food and sleep all forgotten. Walking in his courtyard, he does not see the people, for no one feels his weight. The one who truly forgets the self does not transgress, and so is without blame.
Tuan Zhuan — Commentary on the Judgment (彖传)
Keeping still means stopping. When it is time to stop, stop; when it is time to move, move. In movement and rest not losing the time, the way is bright. Keeping still in the right place, he stops where he should. Above and below oppose each other; they do not join. Therefore he does not feel his body, and walking in his courtyard does not see the people - no blame.
ExplainedKeeping still does not mean stopping at everything, but stopping when the time is right to stop and moving when the time is right to move; when movement and rest do not miss the time, the way is bright. The mind must be stilled in the right place - the spirit mountain, not the apertures of ear and eye that are full of desire. When the mind stops in the right place the two mountains above and below oppose and do not join, so that there is no struggle with desire; and then, without blame.
Xiang Zhuan — Image Commentary (大象)
Two mountains together: Keeping Still. The gentleman does not let his thoughts stray beyond his position.
ExplainedTwo mountains standing together. The gentleman does not let his thoughts go beyond their place - the mind may think, but must stay awake and not leave its true seat. The mind of an infant never leaves it; grown, one is turned upside down and the mind wanders into the six dusts. Thinking without leaving one's position is the root of meditation.
The Six Lines (六爻)
The lines are read from the bottom upward. Each carries its own text, a Small Image commentary, and a plain-English reading.
Line 1 · YinLine 1
Keeping still at his toes. No blame. Favorable to persevere forever.
Small ImageKeeping still at his toes: he has not lost what is right.
ExplainedThe first teaching is discipline: stop the desire as soon as the toe begins to move, before a spark becomes a fire. This is the most successful way, to be alert enough to press down the first stirring thought. Yet one must keep this vigilance forever, for no one should trust himself to sit beside temptation unmoved.
Line 2 · YinLine 2
Keeping still at his calves. He does not rescue what follows; his heart is not glad.
Small ImageHe does not rescue what follows: he has not withdrawn and obeyed.
ExplainedThe awareness is slower and the force has reached the calves. The foot is raised and pulled back, so one does not drift with the current, yet the heart is not glad because what has started must be dragged back. What is kept still is not only desire but feeling as well. Heaven always leaves a voice to warn before a wrong becomes irreversible; one who still listens has not erred greatly.
Line 3 · YangLine 3
Keeping still at his loins. He splits his back muscles. Danger scorches his heart.
Small ImageKeeping still at his loins: danger scorches the heart.
ExplainedHere desire and feeling have reached their limit and cannot be satisfied, yet must be stopped - like lifting a weight until the lower back gives way. Danger scorches the heart: the mind is blackened by resentment, and the resentment becomes a lingering demon, and one may commit a monstrous crime. Of all the ways of using discipline, this is the most dangerous.
Line 4 · YinLine 4
Keeping still at his body. No blame.
Small ImageKeeping still at his body: he stops it in himself.
ExplainedFrom the fourth line upward one enters the spirit mountain and takes awakening as the teacher. To keep the body still is to awaken to one's nature, and then bodily desire ceases at once. It is not war against desire but a root-level stillness. Kept with reverence in the right seat, desire cannot shake it, and no cold water or book of doctrine is needed.
Line 5 · YinLine 5
Keeping still at his jaws. Words are in order. Regret vanishes.
Small ImageKeeping still at his jaws: because of the center and correctness.
ExplainedThe jaws kept still mean few words; in the first absorption even inner speech falls silent. And the words spoken are in order, fitting both the occasion and the truth - above, matching what the sages realized; below, answering the capacity of those to be taught. The mind being in the right place, one either does not speak or speaks and hits the mark; thus the flower of wisdom opens and the words become as precious as gold.
Line 6 · YangLine 6
The keeping still is earnest. Good fortune.
Small ImageThe good fortune of earnest stillness: he ends with richness.
ExplainedEarnestness is piling earth into a mountain: without word or motion it transforms, as a furnace may be silent yet melt the ice. A person of great virtue does not manage others by speech; those who come near lose their greed, fear and folly of themselves. Richness means the depth of character that can bear the heavy karma of others. This is the one wholly fortunate line of the hexagram.
Key takeaway
The mountain is stillness: when movement reaches its extreme it turns to rest, and the mind that is kept still develops insight, from discipline to awakening, until one forgets the self and transforms without words.
