The Judgment (卦辞)

The Family. It is favorable for the woman to be steadfast.

ExplainedThe sage makes the woman the head of the house, for a home is bound not by bricks but by love, and that cementing love is a mother's unconditional care. Saving the world must begin in the family, where the yielding way can unfold. Where love gives out, quarrels and divorce follow; severity belongs to the other half of the work, and each must keep to its task.

Tuan Zhuan — Commentary on the Judgment (彖传)

In The Family the woman's place is set within and the man's place without; man and woman set right is the great order of heaven and earth. The family has a stern ruler: it is the parents. Father father-like, son son-like, elder brother elder-brother-like, younger brother younger-brother-like, husband husband-like, wife wife-like: then the way of the family stands right. The family set right, the world is settled.

ExplainedThe second line is the woman's place and the fifth the man's, so the woman keeps the inner realm and the man the outer, each in place as heaven and earth are in place and not to be inverted. Parents are the household's stern rulers. When kindness, filial duty, fraternal care and mutual support each hold their station, the family stands right, and a world of right families stands settled, not by policy or diplomacy but by household order.

Xiang Zhuan — Image Commentary (大象)

Wind comes forth from fire: The Family. Thus the noble one's words have substance and his conduct has constancy.

ExplainedFire warming the home gives rise to wind, and one goes out into the world with vigor. Toward the family the noble one speaks of virtue and duty rather than of gossip, and acts with perseverance: teaching by word and by example, for parents instruct from the moment they open their mouths.

The Six Lines (六爻)

The lines are read from the bottom upward. Each carries its own text, a Small Image commentary, and a plain-English reading.

Line 1 · YangLine 1

Guarding the household at the outset: regret vanishes.

Small ImageGuarding the household: the will is not yet changed.

ExplainedBuilding a home begins with guarding it, keeping corrupt values from being taken for truth. The foundation is right values planted in early childhood, benevolence and duty instilled into the deep mind where they remain for life. Where parents set the will early on goodness, the children learn it without effort and never regret it.

Line 2 · YinLine 2

She pursues nothing of her own; she keeps the household provisions. Steadfastness brings good fortune.

Small ImageThe good fortune of the second line: compliant and yielding.

ExplainedA mother who seeks nothing for herself, cooking and providing at home, brings the whole house to integrity. Freedom from craving is the highest human state and makes her the finest of models, so that children yield where force could never win them.

Line 3 · YangLine 3

The family is harshly disciplined: regret and peril, but good fortune. Wife and children laughing and idling: in the end, distress.

Small ImageThe family harshly disciplined: not yet astray. Wife and children laughing and idling: the household rule is lost.

ExplainedThis is the father's place: strict, holding the boundary, insisting that each bear a share of the work. It is tense and may cost regret, but the end is good. Where the household spends its days in idle laughter with nothing done, the family rule is lost and ruin follows.

Line 4 · YinLine 4

Enriching the family: great good fortune.

Small ImageEnriching the family, great good fortune: compliant and in place.

ExplainedThe family grows rich not by straining after money, which only deepens poverty when character is poor, but by right views, upright character and mutual love, blessing conferred by heaven. This is the yielding line in its place: the homemaker points the family in the right direction.

Line 5 · YangLine 5

The king draws near to the family. Do not fret: good fortune.

Small ImageThe king draws near to the family: mutual love.

ExplainedEnriched, the family becomes a model for society, and a mandate descends to influence many households, as a court grows among many halls of worship. Do not worry that the scope is beyond you: hold to one principle, that all love one another, and set the example, and the rest follows.

Line 6 · YangLine 6

With sincerity, majestic: in the end, good fortune.

Small ImageThe good fortune of majesty: it means turning to oneself.

ExplainedFor those who lead the many, sincerity alone confers dignity, and no anger is needed. Real majesty is turned inward, asked of oneself, and then heart answers heart with no word spoken. Words and deeds can be feigned; the teaching of the heart is the truest, and it ends well.

Key takeaway

The Family teaches that the household is knit by a mother's love and right values, and that order in each home is the foundation of order in the world.
